Bumperplus

Bumpers, bladders, dogs, or inflatables...the idea is to give you that extra measure of comfort and safety without sacrificing rowing and sailing performance. There needs to be a perfect diameter size to accommodate the needs of most dinghies 8-12’ long. Bumper Plus is the answer. It ’s 4” diameter is perfect. It doesn’t turn your hard shell dinghy into a rubber inflatable that’s hard to push. It does stop you from excessive heel and hitting the drink.

It seems to be the rage. Give your dinghy that extra edge of stability, peace of mind for those on board who are worried about swimming, increased comfort boarding or leaving, or extra buoyancy for divers coming in over the gun holes. The simplest and cost efficient solution is to attach Bumper Plus along the rails. The retrofit is easy. (1) A 3/4” diameter, pvc plastic tube, is fastened to your dinghy rail and the 4” diameter tubes , with a special sewn in chord, slides into the opening grooves along the full length. 2) Attach Bumper Plus with end chords and adjustable straps that attach to small eye straps positioned along the rails. Either way, you've accomplished that extra comfort zone for your whole family without sacrificing sailing performance from that drag in the water.

Bumper plus is so named because her role is multi purpose. It acts as a superior rub rail to avoid those “ bumps in the night” and scuff marks to the big boat, and it gives you and your family that extra edge, “ piece of mind” when the crew is out alone.

The secret to safety and good performance is not to have the diameter of the side mounted buoyancy ( whatever the make or model) too large so that it drags in the water at a minimal angle of heel ( 10-15 degrees). There are inflatables and there are real dinghies that row, tow, power and sail and in my humble opinion, never shall the two successfully intertwine. Every knowledgeable sailor knows that every boat is a compromise. The BUMPER PLUS was originally designed for the NN10-II nesting dinghy, which has a moderate freeboard, and like most dinghies will not perform well with her waterlines messed with inflated tubes that change her angle to the water, and increase drag. BUMPER PLUS is a good compromise that gives sufficient positive buoyancy without sacrificing performance.

Sails

Sails are always a specialty item and one of the most important factors hand in hand with hull design, the makes any boat a “witch “ in the water or an anchor. There is little that beats the frustration of being out on a beautiful day in perfect wind conditions and just plodding along. Even the most die-hard cruiser type has his patience tested when his dinghy just will not get up and go.

The main and jib for the NN10-II was originally designed with a 50 sq. ft main, twin batten, on sail rings and halyards, and a 21sq. ft jib with spectra in her luff, set flying 3/4 the way up the mast. This fractional rig worked like a dream to make the NN10-II perfectly manageable on a 16.5 ft mast , a lot for a 10’2” dinghy to carry. The result was a super fast little boat, that could be sailed in up to 20 knots by a 14 year ( 140 lb. ) teenager who just sat on the rail and had a ball. But in light airs and on all points of sail, she was a real performer. The lead between the sails SA and the boats CLR was a modest 10-11 %. It allowed the boat to take a reef in the main and also sail admirably with the jib doused, if there was a hint of trepidation.

Mast'n Sailbag

The sail and mast bag was originally designed for the NN10-II to encapsulate the jib and main rolled, as to avoid excessive creasing, and to occupy 1/3 of the bag with the three sectional mast and boom to sleeve down the other 2/3 section. The width of the bag stuffed is 18” by 7’0 long. It in turn can be rolled together into a round shape approximately 9” in diameter by 7’0 long. It come with a draw chord to close the open end and is fabricated with Odyssey 5 0z polyester for maximum water proofing and ultraviolet protection. It’s a handy package to store the entire sail system including running rigging.

Masts

Masts are constructed of 2” dia .065 extruded aluminum tube in three sections, telescoping together with PVC sleeves for strength and smooth operation. They are powder coated white. The attachments for mast head blocks are SS and the gooseneck attachment is an engineered bushing assembly that accepts a snap lock wishbone oarlock firmly attached to the boom. The boom is 1” dia .065 extruded aluminum, powder coated white. The mast assembly can be made self stayed or have eye strap fitting for shrouds and forestay. The blocks accept 3/16 or 5mm braided line.

Rudder

The rudder, as shown, has been very successful over the years. From it’s traditional foil shape in beautiful hardwood birch, finished bright , to the high density “ boatboard” used for the housing, this rudder stays down when it’s supposed to and kicks up under pressure. All parts are ultra violet protected for years of service. The tension eye bolt is variable, easy and practical. It’s finished off with a 2’ ( or longer ) 1” aluminum, powder coated, tiller and rubber grip. The rudder itself is 1” wide with 1/2 “ boatboard on either side for a total width of 2”. It can be modified to fit most gudgeon/pintle assemblies. Beautiful and practical. Note: We can also custom build beautifully curved, Birch and Mahogany, traditional tillers of varying lengths.

Dagger Board

The dagger board draws 3’ with a length of 9” and a width of 1”. It was originally designed for the NN10-II and as shown, carries the mainsheet block on top of the dagger board head. This arrangement can obviously be changed to fit any rigging requirements. The board, as the rudder shown, is matched with beautiful Russian Birch hardwood and shaped to a lovely foil with maximum lift characteristics. It can be finished in a variety of colours or varnishes or left for the owner to finish.
